Marine Systems

Introduction

The Marine Systems (MS) Section is responsible for the engineering test and evaluation of marine engineering systems. It carries out performance testing of gas turbines, diesel engines and pumps driven by steam turbines, electrical motors, gas turbines or diesel engines. Suitability and efficiency of environmental protection equipments can be assessed using various test rigs and our in house laboratories. Full certification of shipboard equipment to both the Canadian and US navies shock and vibration standards, as well as certification to various commercial or other military environmental standard can also be provided.

Areas of Expertise

The MS Section operates and maintains NETE facilities used in the testing, evaluation and performance measurement of marine systems. These facilities include the following:

  • Two modern temperature controlled engine test cells used for testing of gas turbines and diesel engines. The test cells are equipped with:

    • Froude Model F0631 water dynamometer:
      • operating speed of 500 to 3500 rpm
      • maximum power of 6700 kW (9000 hp)
      • maximum torque of 50,000 Nm (36,750 lb-ft);
    • Schenk Water Dynamometer Model D2100 2e:
      • speed range of 400 to 4000 rpm
      • maximum power of 2100 kW (2800 hp)
      • maximum torque of 15,000 Nm (11,000 lb-ft);
  • Automatic data collection and data reduction capabilities.
  • Several specialized test rigs for the testing of fluid purifying and handling equipment, for the testing of material subjected to hot gases, and for the testing of environmental protection equipment, such as Oily Water Separator and Oil content Monitors;
  • Auxiliary Machinery test beds for the evaluation and performance testing of steam, electrically, gas turbine and diesel engine driven pumps, with a flow capacity of 227 m3/h (1000 US gpm);
  • Light and medium shock test machines with a capacity of up to 7000 pounds;
  • Shock test facility with capacity up to 15 tons;
  • Environmental chambers capable of simulating various climates;
  • Vibration exciter with a force rating capacity of 17500 lbs and sine, random and shock test capability;
  • Mechanical testing equipment used for tensile, compressive, bending, fracture and fatigue test on ASTM standard and non-standard specimens;
  • Interlaken series 3000 servohydraulic load frame (microprocessor controlled) with a maximum dynamic load rating of 978 kN (220 kips) and variable stroke with a maximum axial displacement of 15.4 cm (6").
